Great Ocean Road - Day 2, 8th Jan

Day two of our Great Ocean Road Adventure ... and it was my turn to drive!!!  For anyone who loves driving, like me - this has to be one of the best winding, climbing, curving, hairpin drives with the best scenery in the world....  Along the Ocean, through rainforest, through acres of tall eucalyptus trees.  A long drive - about 220 miles each way but fabulous!

Following on from a recommendation from the owner at the motel, we headed cover to The Grotto at the far end of the Ocean Road.  The weather was a lot warmer today, Mark fully covered up as he got enough sun yesterday!
Just down the road to the Bay of Martyrs ....  Superb beach - cold water!!
We then stopped back at Port Campbell where we had stayed the night before, to grab some coffees and lunch to take away.  We bought William some budgie smugglers! (Rip curl of course) and some very cool shades....my little surf dude!!

Then a short drive to the amazing Loch Ard to eat our lunch. This cove was named after a ship the Loch Ard was ship wrecked here in the 1900's. The ship was travelling from Gravesend in Kent, England filled with cargo and 57 emigrates bound for Melbourne. There were only two survivors, the ships apprentice and a young woman passenger who lost 7 members of her family in the wreck.
This was one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen ..... We just couldn't pull ourselves away!
Then Mark spotted a snake on the beach, much to Williams fascination.... Emma kept a respectful distance!
Then another short drive to The Twelve Apostles, the most famous landmark on the Great Ocean Road.

After a much needed ice cream at the visitor centre, off we rolled back towards Melbourne, taking in the fantastic scenery along the way.
.... No idea what that animal is! Answers on the back of a post card please!!!!!
At about 5.30pm we stopped in beautiful Lorne for a walk along the pier & some dinner.
Really windy spot here - hence the good surf & we were lucky enough to spot a cheeky seal picking off the bait from the lines from the fishermen on the pier!  We all loved it, but the fishermen weren't so pleased!

After a great dinner at a surf diner, back in the car and on to our motel near the airport.  We have an early start in the morning to catch our 8.30am flight to Hamilton Island, Whitsundays.  Can't wait!!!! X
